Vinatieri set to return for his 23rd year in the NFL.

It was announced today that the Colts veteran kicker, Adam Vinatieri is returning on a one year deal for 2018. It  will be his 23rd NFL season. He spent his first 10 in New England and surprisingly even more years (12 going on 13) in Indianapolis. He entered the NFL in 1996 after a year in the World League of Amreican Football, which later became NFL Europe.

18 fun facts

In 1996:

  • Peyton Manning was entering his junior year at Tennessee.
  • Von Miller was 7 years old, Brandon McManus was 5.
  • John Kasay (Carolina)  led the NFL with 45 field goals.
  • Cary Blanchard (Indianapolis) was the AP All Pro 1st team kicker
  • The Broncos won the AFC West  with a 13-3 record.
  • Brett Favre, Reggie White and the Green Bay Packers beat the rookie and his New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.
  • Then Patriots coach Bill Parcells nearly cut him after starting 3/7 over his first 3 games, he finished the year going 24/28 and then 2/3 in the playoffs.
  • Terrell Davis was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year.
  • Entering ’96, Jan Stenerud   had the most Field Goals in NFL history with 373.
  • Today, Morten Anderson has the record with 565, Stenerud is 13th and Vinatieri is 2nd with 559 and should easily pass Anderson in the ’18 season.
  • Entering ’96, George Blanda had the most Extra Points kicked in NFL history with 943.
  • Today, Blanda still owns the record, Vinatieri is 5th with 808.
  • Entering ’96 Blanda had the most points scored in NFL history with 2002.
  • Today, Anderson owns the record with 2,544, Blanda is 7th, and Vinatieri is 2nd with 2,487 and again should easily pass Anderson in the ’18 season.
  • With 83.14% of FG made, Vinatieri is 13th in NFL history in FG accuracy. Justin Tucker (Baltimore) with 90.17% is the leader.
  • In the post season that % drops to 82.4.
  • AV is the NFL all time leader in post season points (227), Field Goals (56), and extra points (65).
  • AV should have never kicked that game winning field goal vs. Oakland in the snow because Tom Brady fumbled and was bailed out by Walt Coleman misapplying the tuck rule #fytb #fyne.

On This Day:
10/19/14

Entering
the night with 506 touchdown passes, Peyton Manning and his Broncos knew it
could be an historic night. They beat the San Francisco 49ers 42-17.

With
2:57 left in the first quarter Manning hit Wes Welker(39) with his 508th
touchdown pass of his career tying future Hall of Famer, Brett Favre. With 3:09
left in the 1st half, Manning hit Demaryius Thomas with an 8 yard
pass to set the NFL record with 509.

Manning
finished the evening 22/26 for 318 yards and 4 touchdown passes, with the other
two going to Emmanauel Sanders (3) and another one to Demaryius Thomas for
(40).

Yet
a year later idiots…..(it’s not worth it).

  • Three-peat would be as about as perfect as it could be.
  • One works, but I’ll take any that come.
  • He should already have 7 or arguably 8, but an official 6, 7 would be nice.(Oh, and I still want them to name the award after him)
  • If a Championship happens, then I’m sure SNL will be around the corner
  • Where’s my football? “There’s something else about Mary?”, can we go in a different direction, not a huge fan of Cameron Diaz but it would be funny to see him say “He’s in town to face the Dolphins Dumbass”
  • Personally, I don’t want to see his former team win another game much less be on the brink of the Super Bowl, but I could live with your scenario if you can get the “Football Gods” to put that in writing.  Of course I’d want NBC to close with the “Star Wars” theme, and I’m one of a few guys my age that has never found an interest in Star Wars.

4 more choices:

  • I want a truly perfect game 23/23 315 yards 5 td’s something along those lines. 100% of his passes, a handful of touchdown passes, yards, etc.
  • Back to back 50 touchdown seasons. He needs 31 more this season. It could happen. They might become the norm at some point, but I’d like for him to be the first.
  • It’s based on championships, but I want pictures of him, Ashley, Marshall & Mosley with confetti and streamers all around.
  • JT & DT to be the first pair of teammates with 15+ td catches. The record would actually be broken with 13+ out of a pair. Six times in NFL history have a pair of receivers each had 12+ td catches. Only one QB has done it twice, the two most recent (Harrison 15 & Wayne 12 in 2004 and D.Thomas 14 & J.Thomas 12 in 2013). So 13 each would set a new NFL record. JT currently has 9 and DT has 6 with 10 games to play.

Q&A Wednesday

Here you go. Outside of Health & Super Bowl Championships what do you want out of the rest 18’s career? It can be a specific stat like 600. It can be a certain event.  I have 3 things in mind. One is “possible”, it might not be likely, but it might be possible.  The other 2 are not very likely but I’d like to see them happen.

Outside of Super Bowl Championships & Health what do you want out of the rest 18’s career?

  • 19-0 would be great.
  • Yards will come next season as long he plays and remains healthy. I’d like to see that broken too, Bortles has 10 with 9 games to go?  I also agree with one more Naked Bootleg that we discussed.
  • I’d be okay with him leading the Big Orange to a handful of titles.
  • 8 tds would be great. He could have had that back in ‘04 against Detroit. He could have had 9 or 10 that day.

My 3 choices:

  • I want another Manning Bowl(regular season), that means he plays out his contract and then some, since it is scheduled for  2017(this is the one with an outside chance  of happening).
  • 190 more touchdowns.  That would give him 301 in Denver, one more than Elway, and it’s nothing against John, I simply want it to happen. Not likely to happen, because if he throws 25 more this year, and 40 each in the final two years of his contract, that would leave him 85 short.  Now if he’s on the field in 2018 anything is possible. Oh and 700 makes for a nice #.
  • 83 more TD passes to Demaryius Thomas, again nothing against Marvin Harrison, one of my favorites, but to me it would just be something else for him and his new 88(30 & counting) to surpass the first 88(112), but again, it’s not very likely to happen.

With all of PM’s season’s or career’s records, which one do you think is the most significant or he values most?

I would say it was the one that ended with his injury. Playing every game, just showing up each week to help the team, I think that would be the one that he would have valued the most had he been able to keep it intact. He had 208. Favre had 297. Peyton would only be at 261 had he never missed a game and played through the 2011 season, so he would  still be years away from it.

Eli is the active leader with 157, 140 games behind Favre, so Eli would have to start each game till 2023 to break it. That one might never fall. Wilson/Luck would have to go 16 more years without missing a start to stand a chance at breaking it. Good luck with that.

From a statistical perspective it would be the touchdown passes, or  wins by a starting QB when he gets that next year(15 behind Favre at the moment). The TD passes contribute to the wins, so I guess I’d have to go with the Wins.
